Garry Tonon was coming in as a favorite to win in his rematch with Shamil Gasanov at ONE Fight Night 34 on August 1st, 2025, but things didn’t quite go his way. He already held a submission win over Gasanov from just over two years ago, when he rolled through for a slick kneebar finish at ONE Fight Night 12. Tonon had only had one fight since then though, while Gasanov had been incredibly active and had rattled off four decision wins against some of the best that ONE Championship has to offer at featherweight. He was making his case for a title-shot and Tonon was still the sole loss on his record.

That’s why the rematch was booked, and the winner was likely going to earn a shot at the division’s champion. Tonon actually tried the exact same kneebar entry as the first fight early on, but Gasanov was wise to it and shut it down early this time. Tonon showed off some great striking throughout the fight too, but Gasanov was equally impressive on the feet. Tonon’s grappling was crisp as always and he even took Gasanov’s back in the final round, but Gasanov did just enough to edge him out on the judge’s scorecards. It was a close fight and although Gasanov may well get a title-shot, a trilogy fight isn’t out of the question now either.
