Former UFC fighter Mateus Mendonca has just revealed that he fractured his penis during a BJJ training session, and he’s warned fellow athletes about the risk of this relatively uncommon injury. He revealed the news during an interview with AgFight and he attributes the damage he suffered to the fact that he wasn’t wearing a cup during training. It’s actually pretty commonplace in the world of Jiu-Jitsu too, primarily because the IBJJF is the biggest tournament organizer in the sport and they don’t allow it at any of their events. That’s a stark contrast to MMA, where a cup is required and referees will even check to make sure all athletes are wearing one.
The UFC veteran Mendonca started out by explaining how the accident that fractured his penis actually happened:
“I went to train jiu-jitsu at my teacher’s gym the day before I returned to Sao Paulo. During the second roll, (my training partner) hit my private parts with his knee when I was trying to pass the guard. I felt an incredible amount of pain and ran to the bathroom. It started to burn. But then the pain went away and I kept going.”
Despite the fact that the pain went away, that didn’t mean that he was out of the woods yet. Mendonca sought out medical advice as soon as it became clear that he needed to:
“A month later, training normally without pain, I started to notice some problems. I started to move and there was a lump. So I went to the hospital. When I got there, the doctor did an exam and immediately transferred me to another hospital for surgery.”
That’s when he found out that he had fractured his penis, and the UFC veteran went on to share his words of advice with his fellow combat sports enthusiasts:
“It’s a good idea to warn everyone. All the guys who train jiu-jitsu, grappling, MMA, anything that involves contact: wear a cup to avoid accidents. This had never happened to me. It was the first time and look what happened. I had to have surgery. I had to be out of action for two months.”
