Famous actor Vince Vaughn is a BJJ enthusiast himself, and he recently explained some of the benefits that Jiu-Jitsu can give children. He actually started training in the sport himself back in 2016 and was eventually promoted to blue belt in 2018 under both Rener Gracie and Ryron Gracie, although it’s not clear to what degree he still trains today. Both of his children train regularly though, and the IBJJF recently caught up with him while he was attending one of their classes under veteran competitor and coach Rodrigo Freitas. Scientific studies have shown that Jiu-Jitsu can be very beneficial for children, but it’s still interesting to hear that echoed in firsthand accounts like this.
There are plenty of celebrity BJJ practitioners out there of course, but Vaughn also has the perspective of being a parent involved in the sport as well and he was happy to share some of what he’s observed in his kids:
“I just think, you know, you make a lot of friends. I think also it gives you a lot of confidence you can handle yourself. I mean the way Rodrigo and his wife trains is incredible. You can see the kids really, you know, go after it in a safe environment where they’re learning. There’s instructors who are constantly walking around and monitoring what they’re doing, giving tips and giving notes. I think it just helps kids, you know, have an area where they can test themselves and be physical so off the mat they really don’t have a lot to prove. So they’re a little more capable to walk away from a situation because they kinda have an outlet for their aggression and they feel confident that they can handle situations obviously. So it helps them actually resolve conflicts and have less problems.”
