Dustin Poirier has had an extensive professional MMA career but one of the things he’s best known for is his love of the jumping guillotine choke. He’s never actually managed to finish an opponent with one but he’s attempted it multiple times and has often gotten very close. Poirier’s biggest strength is undoubtedly his striking and that’s what has earned him the majority of his wins, but he’s developed excellent grappling over the years as well. He started attempting the jumping guillotine choke more often just a few years ago now, and he’s been open about the fact that he’ll keep trying it.
He’s been attempting it so often in fact that other fighters have actually planned for it and tried to use the tendency against him. He has plenty of other tools at his disposal though and can always rely on his elite striking even if his opponent has a better gameplan on the ground. It’s that well-rounded skillset that has allowed him to become a mainstay at the top of the UFC lightweight division, winning an interim title and fighting for an undisputed title three times. Poirier has fought the very best fighters in the world for well over a decade now, amassing a 30-9 (1) professional record in one of the toughest divisions.
With wins over Conor McGregor, Anthony Pettis, and Max Holloway, Poirier has earned his place among the very best lightweight fighters of his generation. Now he’s preparing for the final fight of his career, a third fight with Holloway at UFC 318 in his home state of Louisiana on July 19th, 2025. Dustin Poirier isn’t leaving the sport without imparting some wisdom though, and he recently demonstrated his trademark jumping guillotine choke on MMA reporter Mike Bohn. Not only did it look like crisp technique from the outside but it was clearly effective too, as he put Bohn to sleep in just a matter of seconds with it.
