Dillon Danis made an explosive claim just recently, that he was offered PEDs by Jake Shields during the build-up to the ADCC world championships. He made the assertion on the same episode of the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani that saw him break his silence on his recent arrest. On it, he gave his side of the interaction that he had with a local bouncer in New Jersey that ended with him on the ground having his back taken in a video that went viral on social media. In the interview, he was also asked about the conflict that he’s had with Shields that has gone on for years at this point:
“That’s an old Jiu-Jitsu beef. Do you know we used to train together, me and Jake? You know [that he is] the only person to ever offer me steroids? Swear on my life. I don’t know, I was doing ADCC. He’s like: “Yo, bro like I have like a steroid dealer, they don’t test us.” I was like – I’ve never done it in my life. I was like: “Yo if I win, like, if I want to play or win a tournament I want to know why I did it.” I was like, I don’t need that. He’s like: “Oh trust me, they don’t test us.” And I’m like: “Nah, probably, I’m good.” He’s the only person ever in my life to do that.”
Dillon Danis and Jake Shields used to train together regularly at one point at the Marcelo Garcia academy and given that Dani was kicked out of Marcelo’s shortly before his ADCC appearance in 2017, it appears as though the PEDs story takes place around that same time. Shortly after that, Danis and Shields competed against one another for the first and only time at Submission Underground 4. Shields emerged victorious although he was unable to find the submission and instead managed to win via fastest escape time in EBI overtime, something that the promotion has been criticized for relying on heavily in the past.
