UFC on ABC 7 took place on August 3rd, 2024 and there were several elite grapplers who gave fine performances. There was even some standouts on the preliminary card in fact, as Guram Kutateladze rallied after dropping the first round against Jordan Vucenic and went on to win a unanimous decision. The event moved in to the main card an it wasn’t long before one of the most accomplished grapplers to ever compete in the UFC stepped into the cage. That woman was Mackenzie Dern and she was coming in to her fight with Loopy Godinez in a tough spot, as she was coming off back-to-back losses for the first tie in her professional MMA career.
There was plenty of fantastic grappling exchanges for fans to enjoy and even a dangerous armbar attempt from Dern in the first round, but it was a close fight overall. Dern was able to come out on top in the end and won a unanimous decision, righting the ship as she looks to build her way back up the strawweight rankings again. Fans were treated to a submission finish immediately after that, as Michael Chiesa took Tony Ferguson down and submit him with a rear-naked choke in the very first round of the next fight. This brought Ferguson’s losing streak to eight fights in a row, while Chiese was able to bounce back from a three-fight losing streak of his own.
Next up was Dieveson Figueiredo against Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera, and Figueiredo was able to use the constant threat of the takedown to win a solid decision win over Vera. Sharabutdin Magomedov also won a decision in the co-main event, beating Michal Oleksiejzcuk on every judge’s scorecard. Then in the final fight of the night, Umar Nurmagomedov made the case for a title-shot in the bantamweight division by beating veteran Cory Sandhagen. Nurmagomedov started off slow in a first round that could have gone either way, but he found his rhythm and won a clear-cut decision by beating Sandhagen convincingly across the next four rounds.
