Top BJJ competitor Dan Manasoiu has just revealed that he is currently being treated for kidney damage that he has suffered as a result of his recent rhabdomyolysis diagnosis. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition that causes the muscles to break down and can lead to muscle death. This can cause kidney damage when the toxic components of the muscle fibers enter the circulatory system. It would be a debilitating condition for anyone, but would be downright disastrous for a professional athlete and their career prospects. It’s also slightly more common in professional athletes though, as it can be caused by overtraining or increasing the training load too fast.
Manasoiu was actually diagnosed with the condition prior to the biggest achievement of his competitive career at ADCC 2024, where he left with a bronze medal in the over 99kg division. It was a significant improvement from his debut appearance at ADCC 2022, where he went out in the opening round of the same division. This year he managed to go 3-1 over the course of the tournament, with his only loss coming from a semi-final match with his teammate and eventual silver medallist Luke Griffith. That medal is the highest honor that Manasoiu has received in professional grappling so far and he’s still very early on in his career.
Dealing with rhabdomyolysis and the resulting kidney will obviously have a significant impact on Dan Manasoiu and his ability to improve in the training room in the immediate future. Regardless, he still has a very bright future ahead of him and plenty of time to recover from the condition and come back stronger. As 2024 comes to an end, it looks unlikely that fans will get to see Manasoiu compete again this year but he will likely be eager to continue the momentum he has coming off that excellent performance at ADCC 2024.
