The Lightweight edition of the Combat Jiu Jitsu World Championships has now finished and Eddie Bravo’s promotion has crowned their latest world champion. There were a few lineup changes from the initial announcement made, mostly due to travel restrictions in place in certain countries, but the tournament remained full of elite grapplers. The man of the hour was actually the youngest competitor in the entire field, recently promoted brown belt Kade Ruotolo, who managed to submit three out of four of his opponents on the way to claiming gold.
Ruotolo submitted Laird Anderson with a Kneebar in the opening round before having a close match with Danny Collazo that he won in the overtime rounds. The semi-final saw him make quick work of Jordan Holy, submitting him with a Guillotine choke inside of a minute, while the other match saw a meeting of two 10th Planet standouts. PJ Barch and Nathan Orchard both submitted their first two opponents on the way to their epic clash that required three rounds of overtime before a winner could be decided. When Barch emerged the victor and met Ruotolo in the final, he was surprised by a highly unusual finish as Ruotolo locked up a Buggy Choke after being taken down to secure the title.
Now that the Lightweight champion has been crowned, fans will look forward to the final 2020 edition of the Combat Jiu Jitsu World Championships: The Female Flyweights in December.
