Double Gold’s inaugural superfight event, which aimed to elevate submission grappling to the level of “fine art,” occurred just outside of Chicago in early December. Approximately 200 people packed the limits of Pica Pau Jiu Jitsu, the gym-turned-gallery in the heart of Aurora, where the event took place. Dubbed the “Double Gold Invitational,” the event was the first in an ongoing series by the just-launched clothing brand. The card consisted of 10 submission-only no-gi matches, featuring competitors from 13 up-and-coming Chicagoland gyms and 2 UFC veterans.
The event delivered on its promise of an engaging and artistic ambiance, completely transforming the local gym into a scene described by many as “exciting,” “underground,” “punk,” and “DIY”. DGI 1 was streamed by fightstreams.live and covered by local podcasters Russell Mormon and Grzegorz Witek of the “Jiu Jitsu Idiots” podcast, which is available on Spotify.
Complete match footage, as well as Double Gold’s branded line of streetwear and grappling gear, is available at dblgld.com. DGI 2 is scheduled for late spring 2024. After the popularity of DGI 1, Double Gold is hoping to amp up its successive event by securing local sponsors and expanding the card with high level women’s matches.
Applications for DGI 2 can be found at dblgld.com.
