The Catch Wrestling US National Championship 2023 took place on December 17th, 2023 and the results produced a huge moment in the development of the sport. Although catch wrestling is a very old grappling style with plenty of history, the amount of participation it enjoyed has dwindled down throughout the 20th century. There have been a handful of strongholds around the world that still teach the sport and thanks in no small part to the success of former UFC heavyweight world champion Josh Barnett, it has seen something of a resurgence in recent years.
The catch wrestling world championship is held in Wigan, England annually and it attracts great competitors from a variety of different grappling styles each year. Just recently, it featured a superfight between Barnett and top BJJ and Judo competitor Owen Livesey. Because of the growth of the sport, the American Catch Wrestling Association has been able to stage a US National Championship for the very first time in 2023 and has now crowned the first modern national champions. With 90 competitors across 10 divisions there was plenty of actions on the mats, and some big names managed to stand on top of the podium. The most notable examples came at under and over 214lbs, where BJJ black belt Sloan Clymer and MMA veteran Travis Wiuff won gold.
