The Caio Terra Academy has sadly suffered a huge setback after a car crashed through the wall of the affiliation’s headquarters in San Jose, California. It’s the location that Caio Terra himself teaches at and it’s home to dozens of talented grapplers, all working together to improve their skills. Those efforts will likely have to be put on hold for at least a short time, as repairs will need to be done in order to make the building safe for use. Nobody was hurt at the very least, but the damage is pretty significant judging from the photos that have emerged from the incident.
As if the damage itself wasn’t bad enough, the driver reportedly fled the scene and law enforcement will now have to track him down. Fortunately they have both his license plate and footage of the crash, so locating the driver should be fairly straightforward. The next step for Terra and the other instructors at his academy is to rebuild and reopen, along with potentially training at other affiliates in the meantime. While an accident of this magnitude could easily be a death sentence for smaller academies, Terra is both popular and successful enough to overcome it.
Terra had one of the fastest journeys to black belt in BJJ history and he immediately set about proving himself at the highest level. He won dozens of gold medals at major events all around the world during his career, including multiple IBJJF gi and no gi world titles. Although he has long been retired from competition, Terra made the transition into teaching very easily and has become one of the most respected coaches in the sport. He has taught some of the biggest names in the sport like Mikey Musumeci, Yuri Simoes, and Mason Fowler; and will continue bringing up the next generation as soon as CTA is rebuilt.
