The Mat Assassin Absolute Grand Prix 2025 took place on January 19th, 2025 and the promotion had brought together several excellent grapplers to compete for the $10,000 grand prize. Legion Jiu-Jitsu black belt and top competitor Breylor Grout was coming in as the promotion’s reigning champion after winning the title last year and he was given a bye through the opening round as the top seed. There was some tough competition waiting for him but he submitted his first opponent and beat his second on points in order to secure a place in the final, putting him just one match away from back-to-back titles.
Elite wrestler Pat Downey was positioned on the other side of the bracket and although many would have predicted him to be Grout’s final opponent, his run was cut short. He had one submission win and a win on points to make it to the semi-finals, but talented New Wave Jiu-Jitsu representative Brandon George submitted both his opponents to stand opposite him. George caught Downey in a tight heel hook to maintain his perfect record of finishes along the way to face Grout in the final. Grout managed to score against him several times though and he ended up winning on points to retain his title.
