BJJ Stars is Brazil’s biggest professional grappling promotion and they’ve come back with a vengeance with event number 8, which featured a Middleweight Grand Prix and several incredible superfights. The grand prix saw a huge upset as the teenage prodigy Mica Galvao managed to storm to victory against all odds, defeating the legendary Leandro Lo by decision and actually submitting ATOS’ Lucas ‘Hulk’ Barbosa right at the end of the regulation time period. The aforementioned superfights saw top competitors like Bia Mesquita and Gutemberg Pereira winning by submission, while Felipe Pena just scraped past Henrique Ceconi in the co-main event.

The main event then gave fans an incredibly rare treat, as Demian Maia made his return to professional BJJ competition. Maia was competing against a fellow UFC veteran in Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira in his first appearance on the mats for well over a decade. He managed to put Oliveira away very early in the match with a Triangle Choke in just a little over two minutes and it seems likely that this will be something of a preview for the future, as Maia has said himself that he plans on returning to BJJ competition once he retires from professional MMA for good.
