BJJ Stars 17 took place on September 20th, 2025 and the results of an exciting grand prix saw a featherweight no gi champion getting crowned. There were upsets right from the start of the event, with recently-promoted black belt Giovanah Oliveira getting a huge submission in her superfight with Jessica Dantas. The other superfights produced some highlights too, with Rerisson Gabriel enjoying a great return to form by beating veteran contender Diego Sodre. There was also a great pair of heavyweight gi matches too, and both of them featured some of the best in the division. The first saw Rider Zuchi submit Nolan Stuart, and the second saw Leonardo Ferreira beat Fellipe Andrew on points in what was a pretty notable upset.
The featherweight no gi grand prix was the main event though of course, and it didn’t disappoint. The opening round went pretty much exactly as expected and the top four contenders all made it to the semi-final, but that’s when things were a little more surprising. Meyram Maquine showed that he’s still one of the best in the world even without a gi on, as he submitted Gabriel Sousa to make it to the final. Then young star Kalebe Pereira gave Ruan Alvarenga an incredibly tough match before injuring himself during a takedown attempt in the final minute. Maquine and Alvarenga had another lengthy battle in the final, but Alvarenga got the nod from the judges to win both the title and the 100,000 Brazilian Real grand prize.
