Battleground Grappling 3 took place on March 11th, 2023 and delivered some fantastic results in beautiful sunny Perth at the Stephenson arena. The crowd was packed and along with the many viewers across the world watching online the event lived up to its billing as one of the best grappling shows in Australia right now. The biggest matches of the night undoubtably fell to Nora Schultz of B-Team Jiu-Jitsu fame and Unity Jiu-Jitsu standout Alanis Santiago, and the co-main event of Pablo Torrealba of Scrappy MMA against Unity Jiu-Jitsu’s berimbolo and pressure pass king Levi Jones-Leary AKA Xanadu God also did not disappoint.
Schultz was coming off a very impressive winning streak across the USA and a notable and somewhat controversial viral leg break incident at B Team academy, but she took the win against a game Santiago. Schultz’s pressure and coolness under pressure winning through against the technical wizardry of her opponent. The match ended with a rear-naked choke secured by the indomitable Shultz, after Santiago succumbed to the pressures of the bout, sickness did not help Santiago but she did not make excuses and both ladies put on a supreme display of Jiu-Jitsu.
Levy Jones-Leary took the unanimous decision against local standout Torrealba, displaying his mastery of guard passing and his constant threat of taking the back. A very game and durable Torrealba did his reputation no harm at all and Jones-Leary also stated his intention to make waves on the world stage at ADCC and beyond. The results of Battleground Grappling 3 were also a celebration of women’s BJJ, with a number of local Australian talents showcasing the very best that the sport has to offer. End to end matches from local legends such as Johanna Skiba, Liz Kingi and Jessica Frantz all did Australian grappling proud.
Other notable matches included a highlight reel standing spider-monkey guillotine from Alex Paddon and a beautiful jumping mounted triangle from rising star CJ Heske. Matthew Clarke also secured an impressive submission victory against newly signed UFC fighter Stephen Erceg. World class athlete Kendall Reusing joined Daniel Peeney on the commentary team to watch all the action unfold. Reusing provided some great insight on the night’s action as she embarked on her Australian and New Zealand Seminar tour.
