The final edition of the ADCC North American Trials have now come to an end and the athletes from the west coast have now booked their place at the 2022 ADCC world championships. The 66kg division saw 10th Planet’s Keith Krikorian go one step further than he did on the East Coast, where he finished second after losing the final to the young prodigy Cole Abate. The 77kg division saw another well-deserved winner as Brazilian Fight Factory’s William Tackett managed to come out on top of the most stacked division of the event, making good on his promising talent and years of hard work.
The 88kg division is where some surprises started when Nicky Rodriguez’s younger brother Jacob managed to emerge victorious in an incredibly tough division. At just 20 years old, Jacob Rodriguez was still a blue belt at the time the trials started and he was a significant underdog in virtually ever match he had. That didn’t matter to one of the B-team’s youngest elite competitors though as he managed to submit plenty of seasoned black belts, something that he’s actually done on several occasions in the past. The under 99kg division also saw an unsuspected winner as full-time Lawyer and Roan Carneiro black belt Paul Ardila put in an impressive showing to earn his place at ADCC 2022.
The over 99kg division was won by another 10th Planet star as Kyle Boehm looked impressive in victory several times over the course of the weekend. The women’s divisions were just as impressive with our choice for Breakout female grappler of the year 2021, Brianna Ste-Marie, storming to glory in the under 60kg division once again after winning the East Coast edition at the end of last year. In the women’s over 60kg division, a Zenith BJJ product managed to earn her place among some of the most physically imposing women in the sport at ADCC 2022, veteran black belt Amy Campo.
