The Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championships 2021 have come and gone, once again delivering six day’s worth of non-stop grappling action and exciting results from start to finish. When the promotion announced that they were offering more prize money than ever before to the medalists of their most prestigious divisions, naturally this attracted an even greater number of competitors than usual. With a total of $800,000 in prize money available and $10,000 being given to each of the adult black belt champions, there was a lot on the line for everyone in attendance at the event. Not only did this attract new competitors who’ve never attempted to win the event before but there were a number of previous champions eager to repeat past success.
In the men’s 77kg division, Mica Galvao shattered the existing record and became the youngest competitor to ever win the event just a month after his eighteenth birthday. He submitted most of his opponents on his way to the final and despite having a tough challenge from Espen Mathiesen in it, he managed to submit the Norwegian grappler with an ankle-lock just 46 seconds before the match ended. On the opposite end of the scale, Beatriz Mesquita gave one of the most impressive performances of the week by repeating her history of dominance at the event and winning gold for a seventh time.
