The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour made it’s arrival in Sydney for the 2022 to 2023 season on February 5th, 2023, and as usual the tournament attracted some of the best athletes in and around Australia who all delivered exciting results. There were several big names competing at the event, most notably Hiago George and Levi Jones-Leary who won their respective divisions at featherweight and welterweight. The lightweight division was probably the most stacked of the weekend, and it all came down to an epic final match between Thiago Macedo and Ariel Tabak. In the end Macedo emerged victorious in the match and took home the gold medal in a tough division, while Charles Negromonte finished at the top of the podium in the light-heavyweight division.

As usual with the AJP Tour, the women’s divisions were mixed brown and black belt brackets in order to allow them to have more matches when competing. Some notable names competed in the women’s divisions too, ADCC trials winner Nikki Lloyd-Griffiths managed to win the middleweight division while Alexa Yanes put on an impressive display to take home gold at light-featherweight. The most female competitors were found in the lightweight division though, where Alanis Santiago managed to beat out the other five women in the bracket to win.
