The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour – Rio De Janeiro 2024 took place on July 21st, 2024 and there were several big upsets featured in the results. The tournament attracted some big names and while most of them managed to emerge victorious, there were a few who lost out on the top spot on the podium. Diego Sodre managed to win the lightweight division despite having some seriously tough opposition in the bracket, while Vinicius Liberati and Victor Honorio did the same at light-heavyweight and super-heavyweight respectively. These were the most predictable winners, but Jhonathan Angelim was an upset winner at featherweight and Jefferson Goteu put on a great performance to win the welterweight division.

Some of the favorites in the women’s divisions made good on their early promise too, particularly Sabatha Lais who beat a series of elite opponents to win at middleweight. The two oppostite ends of the weight spectrum were won by top contenders too, as the heavyweight champion was Yara Soares and Diana Teixeira won gold at roosterweight. One of the biggest storylines of the event came at lightweight though, and it was thanks to the AJP Tour practice of mixing brown and black belt women. Sarah Galvao got the biggest wins of her career so far and beat several elite competitors to take home the gold medal there.
