Randy Couture and Mark Coleman are among the biggest legends in MMA history, and the two men recently engaged in a Car Jitsu match against one another. Not only do both men own a special place in the MMA history books, but they have also both been inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. They are among the most successful pioneers who competed in the earliest days of the sport, with both of them reaching the top of their division during their respective careers. In fact, many of the tactics and techniques that are used commonly today originated from what they were doing in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Couture was among the first to utilise dirty boxing and wrestling against the cage wall to great effect, while Coleman was known for popularising the use of ground and pound as a path to victory. They both came from a wrestling background and Coleman made his debut in 1996, with Couture following shortly after in 1997. They both competed for the UFC right from the start of their careers, with Coleman winning the UFC 10 tournament and Couture winning the UFC 13 tournament. Although they both went elsewhere to compete for promotions like Rings and PRIDE during their careers, they also both retired as UFC fighters too.
This Car Jitsu match isn’t even the first time that Randy Couture and Mark Coleman have faced one another either. Although they managed to miss each other during the prime of their respective careers, they made history together in the first fight between UFC Hall of Famers at UFC 109 in 2010. Couture ended up coming out on top in that fight, submitting Coleman with a rear-naked choke in the second round. It’s only fitting then that their rematch takes place in a grappling ruleset, although nobody would have predicted that it would be in a car. Car Jitsu is growing in popularity though, so it’s no surprise that legendary martial artists might start to get curious about the format.
