Mica Galvao and Charles Oliveira recently took part in a training session together and some footage has been shared of the hard sparring that they had together. Both men are at the very top of their respective sports, with Galvao being one of the best lightweight grapplers on the planet and Oliveira being at the very top of the UFC lightweight rankings. Although Oliveira is more well-known as an MMA fighter, he was actually originally an incredibly talented and experienced BJJ competitor just like Galvao.
Oliveira was not only a successful BJJ competitor at the beginning of his combat sports career, but he’s been able to use those skills to enjoy massive success in his MMA career as well. He actually holds the UFC record for the most submission finishes and most finishes overall, with an incredible resume of wins over some of the best fighters on the planet. Although he’s been focused on his MMA career for years at this point, he’s still been able to develop as a grappler and has even returned to BJJ competition occasionally as well.
It’s clear that Charles Oliveira would still be able compete at the highest level of the sport as well, as he clearly gives Mica Galvao a great round when the two are sparring together. This would be impressive against any young competitor at the top of the sport, but Galvao is pretty much universally regarded as a generational talent as well. He would have actually been the youngest IBJJF World Champion in history, but he was stripped of the title after failing a PEDs test. That suspension has now been served though, and he’s back on the path to regaining his status as a world champion in 2024.
