UFC Vegas 79 is scheduled for September 23rd, 2023 and the promotion has managed to stack the card with some fantastic MMA grapplers. While any UFC card will feature some fighters with a background in wrestling or a BJJ black belt, there’s an abundance of them competing at this event. As a result, there’s sure to be plenty of high-level scrambles for the fans to witness and the chances are that there will be some submission finishes too. Although it isn’t guaranteed yet, the main event is expected to be a battle between two top lightweight contenders in Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot.
This will likely play out similarly to the classic striker v grappler matchup, as Fiziev is a Muay Thai veteran who has so far used his elite striking to build up an impressive 12-2 record in MMA. Gamrot on the other hand is an ADCC veteran and a KSW double champion who has been working his way up the UFC lightweight rankings since signing for the promotion 3 years ago. Gamrot has a 22-2 (1) professional MMA record and both men are sat just outside the top 5 of the lightweight division, so whoever wins this fight will likely be just one fight away from a title-shot.
Fan-favorite Bryce Mitchell will also be competing at the event as he looks to bounce back from his first professional loss by facing Judo brown belt and BJJ black belt Dan Ige. Although the order of each fight hasn’t been confirmed yet, Kamaru Usman‘s heavyweight brother Mohammed and BJJ black belt Ricardo Ramos will both be competing at some point on the card. There are several other fights confirmed for UFC Vegas 79 and there will be many more added in the coming weeks, but there’s already plenty for grappling fans to look forward to as it is.
