Read moreGracie is the most famous surname in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the sport wouldn’t be here at all if it wasn’t for the family that it belongs to. It all started with Mitsuyo Maeda, who imparted his wisdom as an elite Judoka to Carlos Gracie. This began in 1917 and the art quickly spread further on to his younger brothers Helio, George, Oswaldo, and Gastao Jr. Over the decades that came soon after, the Gracie family made a name for themselves in Vale Tudo fights and built up a large academy of students who learned from them. As the sport grew, the family has maintained a prominent place in it and many Gracies from the later generations have become incredible competitors in both BJJ and MMA.
