Sharaputdin Magomedov and Edson Barboza just took part in a fun grappling match at Hype Fighting: Brazil on March 11th, 2026. It was an unusual booking that only came about at the very last minute, when Jorge Masvidal pulled out and Barboza stepped in as a replacement. It was an interesting one to say the least, as both of these MMA veterans are known primarily for their striking abilities instead. Magomedov was also going to be eager to get a win in this one, as his last appearance for the promotion was a draw against Arman Tsarukyan in Armenia.
It was a pretty slow start as both men weren’t willing to accept bottom position and didn’t want to overextend or expose themselves while looking for a takedown. They battled it out in the clinch for a few minutes but eventually Magomedov made his move, driving forward and reaching for a single-leg to put Barboza on his back. He transitioned to the bodylock straight off the takedown and used it to sit heavy on Barboza’s butterfly hooks. He worked his way to half-guard pretty quickly and Barboza did create some space briefly, but Magomedov got back to the bodylock and completed his pass.
Barboza recovered half-guard but Magomedov was working on a knee-slice pass with his underhook. Barboza fought for an underhook of his own and used the threat of the sweep or wrestle-up to prevent Magomedov from passing again. Magomedov pulled his leg free and stood back up, with Barboza popping back up after him. Magomedov charged forward and picked up a single-leg, transitioning to the high-crotch and hitting one more takedown right as the match ended. The match was ruled a draw due to the rules in play, but Magomedov definitely got the better of Barboza in what was a fairly uneventful match.
