Nate Diaz revealed in a recent interview that he only has his sights set on one MMA fight at the moment, and that’s the long-awaited trilogy fight with Conor McGregor. It’s a fight that’s almost a decade in the making now, as the pair first met in the cage all the way back in 2016. That was when Diaz snapped McGregor’s lengthy win-streak and handed him the first loss of his UFC career with a rear-naked choke. Their rematch was booked almost immediately and it took place just a few months later, with McGregor getting revenge and earning the win by majority decision.
The idea of a third fight between Diaz and McGregor has been floated around numerous times over the years since then, and even Diaz himself believes that ‘it’s inevitable’. Obviously the landscape of professional MMA has changed dramatically since then, but Diaz still thinks this is the right fight to make:
“If I could fight anybody right now; I would fight, with all due respect to them, if Conor McGregor came back. Sh*t, Conor McGregor. There ain’t nobody else to fight, really, right now. I would like for him to come back and impress everybody first. Not that he needs to, but it would be great to see him back. Everybody’s hating on him. I’d like to beat up somebody on top of the world, and I think he’s got the capability to do that.”
Diaz did mention one more option for him, but the size difference has taken some of it’s appeal:
“Then that little Ilia Topuria, he’s doing a really good job. He’s a little small for me, but those two are probably the best fights.”
Diaz isn’t just an MMA fighter these days though, he’s also been embarking on a professional boxing career since parting ways with the UFC. He’s only had a pair of boxing matches and he’s currently 1-1 there, but his most recent one was a majority decision win against Jorge Masvidal. As a result, he also sees some interesting opponents for him in the boxing world too:
“And then on the boxing side, obviously Canelo (Alvarez) or (Terence) Crawford. I ain’t asking for nothing, but when I whoop someone’s a**, I’m gonna get them motherf*ckers, too. With all do respect. So that’s my plan.”
