The IBJJF has just announced an absolute grand prix that will be coming in 2023, but the date and full lineup of the event has yet to be confirmed. As always the event will feature some of the best gi grapplers on the planet competing in a tournament, along with several superfights between top talents as well. Although the tournaments at IBJJF Grand Prix events are usually contested in specific weightclasses, this is far from the first time that they’ve staged an absolute tournament. An IBJJF Absolute Grand Prix also took place in 2022 and featured a superb lineup that would be difficult to find anywhere else.
The IBJJF has long been the biggest BJJ competition organizer on the planet, with tournaments taking place all around the world almost every weekend. While the IBJJF world championship always attracts the best gi grapplers every single year, the promotion worked hard to break new ground in recent times. They came up with the idea of the IBJJF Grand Prix, an event where they could invite specific competitors instead of relying on those who choose to enter their normal tournaments.
The date and lineup for the IBJJF Absolute Grand Prix 2023 have yet to be confirmed, and it’s likely that there won’t be any news on this until the next grand prix event takes place on March 3rd. Regardless, every IBJJF grand prix event delivers a ton of high-level grappling matches and this will almost certainly be no exception. This will also be only the second of these events that will see the use of the new anti-stalling rules that were introduced from 2023 onward. It’ll be interesting to see if these rules make an impact and actually create a better viewing experience for the fans.
The IBJJF announced that they will be staging an absolute grand prix in 2023 in a recent post to the promotion’s official Instagram account:
