Garry Tonon will be returning to MMA in the co-main event of ONE Fight Night 12 on July 14th, 2023, when he comes up against Shamil Gasanov. While Tonon made his name as a fantastic grappler and ADCC veteran, he currently holds a 7-1 professional MMA record and is working his way towards another title-shot in the ONE Championship featherweight division. He has spent his entire career competing for the same promotion after making his debut back in 2018, and he quickly rose through their rankings.
Tonon put together a perfect 6-0 record within less than two years and he managed to earn himself a chance to dethrone Thanh Le as the ONE Championship featherweight champion. Tonon had faced several different types of MMA fighters during his time in the sport, but Le was undoubtedly going to be his toughest challenge yet. The fight ended in less than a minute, as Le countered a heel hook attempt by Tonon with some brutal ground and pound to win by knockout. After suffering his first loss in MMA competition, Tonon took a little time away in order to return to grappling and compete at ADCC 2022.
Tonon went out in the first round of ADCC 2022, but he immediately got back to work after that and started preparing for his return to MMA. He came back with a vengeance as well, earning a first-round submission win over Johnny Nunez at ONE Fight Night 6. Now Garry Tonon will be up against Shamil Gasanov at ONE Fight Night 12, an undefeated fighter who improved to 13-0 when he won his ONE Championship debut late last year. It’ll be a tough challenge for Tonon but a win here could put him right back in the mix for title-contention in the featherweight division.
