The grappling scene in Miami has been growing in recent years and White Lion Promotions have quickly become one of the most impressive promotions in the area. They feature a ton of variety at their events, changing between different rulesets and belt levels on a regular basis to keep things interesting for the fans. This particular match between Ulyses Fernandez and Nicholas Leggo took place under the Combat Jiu-Jitsu ruleset, something that is known for delivering plenty of action from start to finish. Although the general goals and positions are essentially the same, the fact that open-handed strikes are allowed on the ground can make matches more entertaining.
The ability to strike on the ground was no doubt welcomed by Fernandez as he’s an experienced amateur MMA fighter, holding a 3-6 record dating back around 5 years before this match took place. He represents Freedom Fighters for both MMA and BJJ competition, whereas his opponent Leggo represents Carlson Gracie Boca Raton. Although the match started out relatively evenly on the feet, Fernandez was able to make good use of his MMA experience once he got the takedown. He was landing some big shots from top position and eventually forced Leggo to turtle, where the referee called an end to the match after several more unanswered strikes.
