The story just seems to get weirder and weirder as BJ Penn has now decided to throw his name in the ring as a potential opponent for Jake Paul in his next boxing match. The callout comes just a matter of days after Paul faced managed to defeat his first opponent with anything resembling combat sports experience, Olympic wrestler and former Bellator and ONE FC World Champion Ben Askren. Although he did manage to knock Askren out in the first round, it’s pretty important to remember that despite being a champion in several MMA organisations Askren has never actually been a striker and has always utilized his wrestling to great effect.
Regardless, Askren still came into the fight full of confidence as he proclaimed that Boxing was the easiest combat sport and both MMA and wrestling were much more difficult. Now it seems that he isn’t the only grappler that seems to be of the opinion that he can make it in boxing, at least when faced with someone who has very little combat sports experience like Jake Paul. Marcelo Garcia black belt Dillon Danis was first up to try and meet the challenge as he called out Jake Paul within hours of the Boxing match ending and now it seems like BJ Penn is equally eager.
Penn made the announcement on his official Twitter account and considering that he finds himself in a similar contractual position to Askren after being released from the UFC following his recent DUI, this isn’t outside the realm of possibility. In the last decade of his career, Penn only managed to win one out of eleven fights and at the age of 42, the amount of damage he took during his career was starting to show. For that reason alone, this is a fight that just doesn’t need to be made.
Hey @triller send me a contract and I will happily knock this fucker out in one round 💯 https://t.co/JSP5lNh9xh
